Coercive Control Claims

Keystone Legal advises and represents clients across Alberta in claims grounded in coercive and
controlling conduct, the conduct at the centre of the tort recognized in Ahluwalia v Ahluwalia, 2026 SCC 16. Coercive control is a pattern, not a single event, and proving it requires a different approach than a claim built on one assault or one incident.

Coercive control can include monitoring and surveillance, restriction of movement or contact with family and friends, control over money and financial decisions, threats, degradation, and the steady erosion of a partner’s independence. These behaviours are often difficult to characterize individually, but together they establish domination over another person’s life.

The firm focuses on building the pattern through documentary records, communications, financial trails, and corroborating evidence, and on framing that pattern so a court can see the whole picture rather than disconnected moments. Files are prepared for trial from the outset, which strengthens the position in any subsequent negotiation.

Consultations are conducted via secure video across Alberta, with in-person attendance at the Calgary Courts Centre when required. Services are available in English and French.
