The practice

The firm advises and represents clients in estate litigation and estate planning, including farm succession, in family law and urgent court applications, in civil claims arising from intimate partner violence, defamation and harassment, in business and governance disputes, and before professional regulators.

Every file is handled through negotiated resolution where that serves the client and through contested proceedings where it does not. It is prepared to the same standard in either direction, with disciplined preparation, command of the financial and evidentiary record, and close application of the law that governs the matter, so that settlement is pursued from a position of strength and, where a matter has to be contested, it is carried forward on the same footing.

Founders, professionals and privately held businesses are advised on their contracts and on the ownership and governance of their companies, and the firm acts for the protection of personal and commercial reputation. Clients come to Keystone Legal at points of significant transition, where discretion, clarity and careful coordination across personal, financial and corporate interests decide the outcome. The firm works alongside the accountants, corporate counsel and advisors a client already has rather than around them.

How the practice works

Advisory and uncontested work is available to clients anywhere in Alberta, and files are held in confidence from beginning to end. The practice is virtual, so meetings take place by video, telephone and email, with in-person meetings available on request in Cochrane or in Calgary, and documents can be exchanged through a secure, encrypted link rather than by ordinary email.
